Sainsbury’s Launches First Till-Free Grocery Store

Sainsbury’s has annouced that Holborn Circus Local store has been refurbished and is to be mobile-first and check-out free. What a great step forward for the supermarket giant.

Sainsbury’s Holborn Circus convenience store is the UK’s first till-free grocery store.

With Sainsburys being the first to experiment with SmartShop Scan, Pay & Go technology in a bespoke food-to-go store, making grocery shopping quicker and more convenient. Many will be looking to Sainsburys to see how the test goes and we are sure that we will see more and more larger supermarkets applying the same technology.

MUUME is very excited and looking forward to seeing Sainsburys using the technology on a larger scale. MUUME offers the same scan, pay & go technology and is excited that a company of Sainsbury’s size seeing the key benefits not only for them but for the customer.

“We know our customers value their time and many want to shop as quickly as possible – technology is key to that. This is an experiment rather than a new format for us – it hasn’t been done in the UK before and we’re really excited to understand how our customers respond to the app experience. We’ll be with our customers and colleagues all the way over the coming months, iterating continuously based on their feedback before we decide if, how and where we make this experience more widely available.”

Sainsbury’s Group Chief Digital Officer, Clodagh Moriarty
